Description

The 8th Day Center for Justice was founded in 1974 after the Urban Apostolate of Sisters in Chicago saw a need for a center for peace and justice in Chicago. Six groups were called upon to create such a place, the Sisters of Mercy, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dominicans, Adrian Dominican, Sister of Providence, and Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Together these groups set up the 8th Day Center for Justice and began their involvement in social justice issues in the city. Starting with hunger, the group saw to the creation of the Food Stamp Hotline, the Chicago Metropolitan Food Stamp Coalition, the Conference on Hunger, and the Chicago Summer Program. Soon, the groups broadened its influence into more global affairs, like human rights, peace, and immigration. Their interest in these issues is showcased by this Exhibit in the magazines they collected. These magazines catalogue the refugee and immigration patterns and crises of the 1990s. They were distributed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The presence of the Refugees magazine in the 8th Day Center for Justice’s archival collection reveals the goals shared by both secular, governmental organizations and religious institutions that advocated Catholic social teaching.
